Stansbury's 1850 Map of the Great Salt Lake
Stansbury's 1850 Map of the Great Salt Lake
This fascinating 44" x 62" map of the Great Salt Lake and adjacent country in the Territory of Utah was drawn by J.W. Gunnison & Charles Preuss, from the survey performed in 1849-1850 by Gunnison, Howard Stansbury and Albert Carrington. Vertical relief, rendered in precise hachure, creates an immediately-accessible sense of the topography of the mountain ranges surrounding the Great Salt Lake, and beaches, marshes and shrubland are all delicately rendered by stipple. For anyone familiar with the mordern-day Salt Lake Valley, this map, surveyed just two years after the Mormon pioneers first arrived, is virtually bursting with delicious historical detail. Perusing the historic place names, settlements, and notations on natural and man-made features is a delight. The original map from which this reproduction is taken was donated to the Library of Congress from the collection of President Millard Fillmore, who famously appointed Brigham Young as the first Territorial Governor of the Utah Territory in 1850-51.
The map is printed on Arches BFK Rives 100% Cotton Rag paper, handmade at the Blanchet Frères & Kléber paper mill in Rives, France on a traditional cylinder paper mould. The subtle pattern of the paper fibers is faintly visible, and lends a nice cloth-like appearance to the whole map. We have retained the original's imperfections, including creases and a slight out-of-square irregularity in the map edge. The borders of the map have a reddish hue.
* NOTE: This is a carefully crafted print of the highest quality, but it is not the original work.
