1943 Mine Tunnels of Big & Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah
1943 Mine Tunnels of Big & Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah
This is a wonderfully fun 24" x 44" map of the historic mines and mine tunnels the Central Wasatch, including Big Cottonwood, Little Cottonwood, and American Fork Canyon and encompassing portions of the modern ski resorts of Brighton, Solitude, Alta and Snowbird. Drawn over a handsome vintage topographic map of the Big Cottonwood, Little Cottonwood, American Fork and Snake Creek Mining Districts, the map shows all the mine shafts, adits, diggings, and drain tunnels. Major mines and mine shafts and tunnels are labeled. Of course all are now closed for safety, but this is an excellent glimpse into the mining past of the Central Wasatch, and gives an indication of just how extensive the mine workings were! Tunnels everywhere are underfoot (or under ski)... and the next time you huck off a snow-covered tailings pile, consider: there are probably miles and miles of historic mine workings under the surface!
The map is printed on Arches BFK Rives 100% Cotton Rag paper, handmade at the Blanchet Frères & Kléber paper mill in Rives, France on a traditional cylinder paper mould. The subtle pattern of the paper fibers is visible in oblique lighting and especially lends a rich and elegant texture to the blank areas in the lower third of the map, making the whole piece pop.
