1915 Map of Glacier National Park

We are delighted to have uncovered this 51" x 44" topographic map of Glacier National Park from 1915! Dedicated just five years earlier in 1910, the map captures the new National Park as early visitors would have found it, including the original ranches, a very few roads and trails, and the Park's glaciers near their largest accurately-mapped extent. 

Uniquely, the map identifies the route of the Glacier Park Hotel Company telephone lines that were installed across the park, as well as hotels and ranger stations. Peaks, creeks, ridges and valleys are all clearly named, and the clarity, accuracy and detail of the mapped topography as shown by 100 foot contour intervals give a spectacular sense of the mountain landscape.  One has to tip their hat to the work of the topographic surveyors who surveyed the entirety of the park by triangulation, and to the cartographers who drafted the contour lines by hand. 

The map is printed on Arches BFK Rives 100% Cotton Rag paper, handmade at the Blanchet Frères & Kléber paper mill in Rives, France on a traditional cylinder paper mould. This beautifully-textured paper lends a rich and handsome appearance to this vintage Glacier map that we just love. It's subtle, but when viewed in oblique light or from a side angle, the grain of the paper just pops, and makes the map superbly eye-catching.
