We love this 44" x 50" Mineralogical & Geological Map of the State of California! Created under the direction of then-State Geologist William Irelan, and drawn by J.C. Henkenius, this masterpiece is delightfully colorful (as vintage maps go), and chock-full of fun details. The geology is simplistic but depicted effectively, and the map also includes labeled mineral deposits of a wide variety, scattered all across the state. But it doesn't end there! The map also includes a long list of elevations for notable peaks, passes and lakes included on the map, and a list of 551 private land grants which are also labeled. The history of California's private land grants following the Treaty of Hidalgo in 1848, in which Mexico ceded California to the United States, is fascinating in its own right, and this map provides one of the most comprehensive catalogues we've seen which visually depicts the location of each grant. There is also a subtle but pleasing and effecting shading to depict topography that gives the map a three-dimensional feel, and roads, railroads, cities and towns - even the tiny ones! - are all shown. Yep... this is a great map to get lost in. We'll opine that this map could be on your wall for decades and never get boring.

The map is printed on Arches BFK Rives 100% Cotton Rag paper, handmade at the Blanchet Frères & Kléber paper mill in Rives, France on a traditional cylinder paper mould. The subtle pattern of the paper fibers is visible in oblique lighting, especially in the blank areas, and lends a rich and elegant appearance to the whole map.

* NOTE: This is a carefully crafted print of the highest quality, but it is not the original work.
