1887 Topographic Map of Weber County, Utah

An heirloom-quality 97" x 44" 1887 topographic map of Weber County, Utah Territory. This remarkable map features some of the most strikingly fine and beautiful hachure and pointing that we've seen. The mountains and valleys east of Ogden are rendered in such delicate and precise linework that they practically jump out of the map, and the density of the hachure is greater on the southeast side of features, perfectly capturing the impression of shadows cast across the landscape.

This map is full of detailed place names, including mountains and streams (many of which have changed), towns, schools, millworks, limekilns, waterworks, prospects, and many other features.

The map was surveyed and drawn by George Washington Jenkins (1857-1926), Ogden City's Civil Engineer and the Weber County Surveyor, and the most experienced Civil Engineer in Utah at the time of his death. Jenkins spent four years performing a detailed topographic survey of Weber County, from which this piece was the result. 

The map is printed on Arches BFK Rives 100% Cotton Rag paper, handmade at the Blanchet Frères & Kléber paper mill in Rives, France on a traditional cylinder paper mould. The subtle pattern of the paper fibers is faintly visible with oblique lighting, and lends a nice cloth-like appearance to the whole piece. Note that there are a few dark verticals lines from the folds of the original map, though almost no detail is lost.
