A handsome 44" x 50" early map of California and Nevada published by H.H. Bancroft & Co. of San Francisco in 1868. The map depicts cities and towns, roads and wagon routes, major peaks and mountain ranges (topography shown by hachure), as well as notable mineral deposits, commentary on arable land, and sporadic historical notes.
The map is printed on Arches BFK Rives 100% Cotton Rag paper, handmade at the Blanchet Frères & Kléber paper mill in Rives, France on a traditional cylinder paper mould. The subtle pattern of the paper fibers is visible in oblique lighting, and lends a rich and elegant appearance to the whole map.
