1851 Panoramic Map of New Orleans Louisiana
1851 Panoramic Map of New Orleans Louisiana
This beautiful 48" x 36" birds-eye view of 1851 New Orleans gives an unmistakable sense of the bustle of this booming port city. Tall-masted ships crowded at the docks, horse-drawn wagons bustling along Tchoupitoulas Street, and paddle-wheelers puffing up and down the Mississippi, their names clearly visible along the sides. "Drawn from nature on stone by J. Backman" and printed by the same, this panoramic city map heralds from the very beginning of the half-century during which such city maps were in vogue, and is more an artwork than a map of attractions, as later panoramic maps would be.
This map is printed on Arches BFK Rives 100% Cotton Rag paper, handmade at the Blanchet Frères & Kléber paper mill in Rives, France on a traditional cylinder paper mould. The subtle pattern of the paper fibers is faintly visible, and lends a nice cloth-like appearance to the whole map. Tears and stains from the original map are reproduced in this print, which adds immeasurably to its character and visual appeal.
* NOTE: This is a carefully crafted print of the highest quality, but it is not the original work.
