This incredible 72" x 30" map of Lewis & Clark's route across the Louisiana Purchase between 1804 and 1806 was drawn by Samuel Lewis, based on the map William Clark himself compiled and drew in 1810 following the Corps of Discovery's expedition. Clark's original map, virtually bursting with detail, can be hard to read in part due to Clark's delicate penmanship. Samuel Lewis's version beautifully captures the essence of Clark's recorded information, including the names and locations of rivers, streams, mountain ranges, Native American villages and bands, including population estimates. It is a fascinating triumph of frontier cartography, and the impact it had on conceptions of the terrain west of the Mississippi River cannot be overstated. Not only is it beautiful, but this map is a delight to study. Anyone familiar with the American West will enjoy matching the mountains, rivers and valleys to their modern names, and also noting how many misconceptions about western geography still persisted in the years following the Lewis & Clark Exploration. This map is truly a monumental achievement, and a delightful centerpiece for any home.

The map is printed on Arches BFK Rives 100% Cotton Rag paper, handmade at the Blanchet Frères & Kléber paper mill in Rives, France on a traditional cylinder paper mould. The subtle pattern of the paper fibers is faintly visible, and lends a nice cloth-like appearance to the whole map. Some faint creases and tears in the original map are reproduced in this print, though the condition of the original map is remarkably good considering its age, and virtually no detail is lost.

* NOTE: This is a carefully crafted print of the highest quality, but it is not the original work.
