Vintage Map of Grand Teton and Yellowstone (Teton County, WY circa 1891-1911)
Vintage Map of Grand Teton and Yellowstone (Teton County, WY circa 1891-1911)
This beautiful 44" x 58" map of Teton County Wyoming was created by carefully stitching together vintage maps of the area from 1891 - 1911, and the result is simply spectacular. Featuring both Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Park, this captivating map shows off the incredible survey work of the young US Geological Survey's groundbreaking Division of Topography. The yellowing from age of the original map sheets provides a handsome aesthetic. Topography (by T.M. Bannon and Arthur Stiles) is shown in 100-foot lines of equal elevation - and what an adventure it must have been to establish such accurate topography for this rugged region in 1899! Mountains, creeks, lakes and settlements are labeled, and buildings and roads are shown. Lakes are colored using the old USGS method of drawing concentric lines rippling inward from the shoreline, drawn in blue. Many old trails are also shown. The lower-left portion of the map includes annotations (in red) added by the USGS in 1945, as well as a note on converting between the polyconic projection and NAD 1927… a fun little tidbit.
The map is printed on Arches BFK Rives 100% Cotton Rag paper, handmade at the Blanchet Frères & Kléber paper mill in Rives, France on a traditional cylinder paper mould. The subtle pattern of the paper fibers is visible in oblique lighting, and lends a rich and elegant appearance to the whole map.
*NOTE: This is a carefully crafted print of the highest quality, but it is not the original work.
