A beautiful 58" x 44" map of Washington Territory and the State of Oregon from 1859 (Oregon had only just received statehood in February of the same year). This delightful frontier map was published by the US War Department's Bureau of Topographic Engineers, and the original was comprised of 30 map sheets set on a cloth backing, the appearance of which is faithfully captured by this detailed reproduction. Topography is represented in a beautiful shading method that is unique to engraved maps produced by the Bureau of Topographic Engineers from this period. Mountains, lakes, rivers and various other landform features are named, as well as the states and territories, cities and towns, roads and wagon routes. The surveys and explorations from which the cartographic information was gathered are listed in a legend under the map title. This is truly a masterpiece of the frontier mapping era.

The map is printed on Arches BFK Rives 100% Cotton Rag paper, handmade at the Blanchet Frères & Kléber paper mill in Rives, France on a traditional cylinder paper mould. The subtle pattern of the paper fibers is visible in oblique lighting and especially in the ample "unexplored regions" of this piece, which lends a rich and elegant appearance to the whole map.

* NOTE: This is a carefully crafted print of the highest quality, but it is not the original work.
