We love this colorful and endlessly-engrossing 50" x 36" geologic map of the Big Cottonwood Mining District in the Wasatch Mountains near Salt Lake City, Utah. Extending from the mouth of Millcreek Canyon on the north to the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon on the south, and from Wasatch Boulevard on the west to Guardsman (Scotts) Pass on the east, the map captures some of the best terrain in the heart of the Central Wasatch.

Unlike many geologic maps, the legend on this 1978 work by the State of Utah Geological Survey does not overwhelm the map. The topography, roads, peaks, and placenames are all visible, overlaid by brightly-colored patches denoting different rock types, with geologic information provided in the legend at the bottom of the map, including geologic age and rock type of the rock units. Fissures and faults, as well as mine prospects, adits and shafts are all shown.

What a fun map this is for the climber, skier, hiker, historian, or anyone familiar with the Central Wasatch, adding context to the literal makeup of these famously beautiful mountains.

The map is printed on Arches BFK Rives 100% Cotton Rag paper, handmade at the Blanchet Frères & Kléber paper mill in Rives, France on a traditional cylinder paper mould. The subtle texture of the paper is visible with oblique lighting, and adds a richness and depth to the map without detracting from the readability of the fine details.

The original map was compiled by Max D. Crittenden, Jr., Frank C. Calkins, Byron J. Sharp, Arthur A. Baker and Calvin S. Bromfield, and modified by Larry P. James, of the Utah Geological and Mineral Survey.
