1885 Panoramic Map of New Orleans Louisiana
1885 Panoramic Map of New Orleans Louisiana
This artistic 53" x 36" birds-eye view of 1885 New Orleans was likely commissioned for The World's Industrial & Cotton Centennial Exposition, a World's Fair held in New Orleans from December 6 1884 - June 2 1885, and which is clearly marked at the left center of the map. Although notable sites are annotated along the bottom edge of the map, there are no labels on the map itself and the whole effect is much more akin to a painting than a city map.
The World Cotton Centennial is an interesting chapter in New Orleans history, and the site occupied by the grounds later became Audubon Park and the Audubon Zoo.
This map is printed on Arches BFK Rives 100% Cotton Rag paper, handmade at the Blanchet Frères & Kléber paper mill in Rives, France on a traditional cylinder paper mould. The subtle pattern of the paper fibers is visible with oblique lighting, and subtly compliments the soft landscape painting effect of the map.
* NOTE: This is a carefully crafted print of the highest quality, but it is not the original work.
